Lisa Kleypas is without a doubt a phenomenal writer. She’s a NYT best seller and has been around for a very long time. So when a writer seeks to write a novel with in a contemporary romance setting with paranormal elements and a splash of BDSM, she would be the woman to try it out. I wasn’t sure it would work for me, but surprisingly I really enjoyed this book.
I read this story in a weekend, I didn’t want to put it down. The novel starts like any contemp rom book, learning about the heroine, she’s lonely bad past relationships, hard worker, beautiful and then BAM she’s a witch! Wait, what? She’s a natural born witch! That’s right! Then back to contemp rom book feel.
In comes Mr. Jason Black! He reminds me of Christian Grey or Gideon Cross. He’s the wealthy, well respected, gorgeous business man. He’s always brooding, completely set in his ways, you know the typical ALPHA MALE! We get a change of POV and learn a little more about Jason and BAM…(unexpected paranormal element). Did you think I’d give it away? Of course not, you need to read the book. Anyways…Jason is my type of guy, confident in ALL of his skills and talents and knows how to treat a woman.
Justine and Jason get a long quite well, maybe too well. As they begin to learn each others dark secrets, they begin to fall in love, which may not be a good thing. Of course with the sparks flying, the sex between these two is explosive. It’s not too graphic, it’s not erotica and even though there is a little taste of BDSM it is not much in my opinion. There is only ONE scene where it could be construed as BDSM, where there is a little bondage, nothing crazy again at least IMO.
There were some twists, turns and betrayals in this would be relationship and I’m not gonna lie, some kind of insta-love going on. I think Justine was a little too easy to forgive, she should have made him gravel more. There were some possible writer pitfalls and no no’s but it read smoothly to me. There were no elements that pissed me off or made my eyes roll. I enjoyed this one from beginning to end and look forward to reading more from Lisa Kleypas
